Ballet is viewed as the basis for all great dancers. This is because of it’s complex and difficult structure of movement. The movement of ballet is created from turnout from the hip, the five positions of the feet, pointe (work on top of toes), extensions (lines made by extending legs out), elevation (balance and height of jumps), and beats (fast actions of bringing legs together). The form of ballet when mastered is a beautiful spectacle. It can be described as elegant and refined. Ballet portrays a poetic picture of art within all its movements. The steps done create a picture which then tells the story. A ballet is used to portray stories, other styles do too, but ballets are famous because of their stories. The Nutcracker is a prime example of a Christmas ballet. Also known for their beauty are Swan Lake and the Sleeping Beauty. Good examples of a ballet today can be seen performed by the American Ballet Theater or New York City Ballet. This form of dance is the most formidable to conquer because of it’s complexity.

The next style of dance broke away from the strict structure of ballet to create a new free form. This form is referred to as modern or contemporary. Contemporary is used because the movement is so free it is constantly creating and defining steps. It’s movement is based upon using gravity, momentum, breathing, and abstract ideas to create steps. A major player in modern dance is the use of gravity and balance. The natural momentum of the body falling or turning because of gravity generates movement. More commonly than not modern is an abstract style. Modern dance is very experimental, not always having themes or a story, making it abstract. Modern uses many things as inspiration, which other styles also do, but modern is more known for it. It often takes everyday ideas or actions and makes a statement of feeling through the new movement. A basic example would be to look at a picture of a dolphin and make a movement reflecting the actions of dolphins. An example of modern dance can be seen performed by the Paul Taylor Company or the Alvin Ailey Company. Modern/contemporary dance is a very abstract form which always moves toward new ideas to be more free.

Jazz, one of the most popular forms of dancing, is usually a more upbeat and fast tempo movement. A wide variety of styles are covered in this form. The different types of jazz include: classic/stylized, lyrical, and street-funk. The classic/stylized form consists of regular clear lines (definite shapes of the body) and sharp (fast and precise) movements. These movements can be quick but also have a flow to them. It goes hand and hand with musical theater. This is the kind you would see in a Broadway show like Fosse or Chicago (show or movie), a Las Vegas show, or in a TV show like “Fame”. Lyrical, another form of jazz, encompasses a more ballet look and feel.

The motions are usually slower and have a fluidity that creates longer lines and to express stronger emotions. Ballad songs are the main music used when creating a lyrical dance. The movement is strongly based on the lyrics of the song and expresses a similar if not the same idea. Street-funk is very similar and related to hip-hop. But it falls under jazz because it uses more technical movements that come from jazz. Street-funk is sometimes called jazz-funk or just funk. This style of jazz uses the modern hip-hop touch to create fast and fun dances. The low (to the ground) brisk style is best described as explosive. It can be seen in lots of cheerleading competitions or even more so in dance competitions. A new example is the TV show the “Wade Robson Project”. Jazz style movement is based on technique from ballet but uses it in an unfixed form.

After learning and training in these forms of dance one is able to apply them. The classic styles are not the only kinds of dance. There are many forms that come from every culture which makes a wide range movement. This variety invites for easily expressing ideas that a person may have about anything. An expression through dance is artistic, because the majority of what is created is based on the aesthetics of the movement. The way it looks is what determines what it means, as in what is written in a book tells what it is about. Dance can be exciting, boring, difficult, easy, old, new, etc. As long as there is an expression of movement, art is created. Therefore any dancing is art.

The world of dance is very complex. There are many forms that fall under these three main categories. The forms - ballet, modern, and jazz are the beginnings of a technical dancer. The descriptions are a general overview to relate to the average person these classic forms of dance.

You can think of a database as an electronic filling system. The data storage for database is accomplished by the use of one or more files. Reports

I now have a vehicle that will allow me to embrace knowledge, to abandon my fears and to ultimately accomplish what I originally set out to do.

At an early age, I can recall my parents purchasing building blocks, electronic robotic lego toys and game puzzles to encourage me to think and use my imagination. My fascination with taking things apart and putting them back together to determine how they worked turned into hours of entertainment and my parents, as well as friends, were surprised at my cleverness. Whenever a subject came along my path that threatened my integrity, I backed down and shied away from the challenge when I should have taken the path that was less traveled and “bit the bullet”.

Now, I am older and I have learned more from my mistakes and have grown from them as a person, as an individual who desires, even covets knowledge at whatever the costs. Currently, I have a comfortable and easy job with an adequate income, live in a nice apartment in the state of Texas, have had the opportunity to associate myself with a lot of great friends, and have also experienced many promotions and advances since my career and educational trek began many years back. But, I desire and crave more as an individual with predetermined desires and ambitions for a better, more diverse and eclectic lifestyle. Although I have a supervisor who encourages her employees’ personal development and promotes within the company, I still have grown bored with my repetitious work as a revenue analyst; I am unhappy living in an apartment preferring one day to own my own home with someone whom I love dearly.

Additionally, I feel I limit myself by staying in the state of Texas and feel the need to move out of state eventually once that opportunity presents itself. In the meantime, I know I have opened my eyes and my mind to the possibilities that are out there for me when I am prepared to embark on such a challenge.

Altogether, I am preparing myself for the possibilities out there by attending the University of Phoenix. I do not know what my future holds, where I will live exactly or the company for whom I will work. I do know that a degree will give me the confidence and the edge to have the mobility I need to make my decisions when the time comes; it will enable me to get a better job or to go into business for myself or even teach on the side; it will raise my income expectation and allow me to support my parents when and if they need my help. In summary, obtaining this degree will give me a sense of accomplishment because I will finally prove to myself that I can face up to any challenge if I am just willing to take a little drive down an occasional bumpy road.

Why are we here? How are we here? What can account for the broad diversity of life we see around us every day? These are the questions man has been asking for thousands of years. It has only been recently, however, that science was sophisticated enough for us to be able to approach the real answer. Anyone can tell you that the currently accepted explanation is the Theory of Evolution.

In the early to mid 1800s, the Theory of Evolution was being formed in the minds of many scientists, but it was first given voice by Charles Darwin in his Origin of Species. He proposed that a process called natural selection acts on random variation within a species to cause only the most fit of that species to survive and leave fertile offspring. Natural Selection is a process that "chooses" specific individuals based on their characteristics, by allowing them to survive and multiply, whereas less suited individuals die out. Thus, over time, only those organisms most suited to their particular environment survive, and organisms become more and more specialized and sophisticated.

Darwin's theory was widely hailed at the time of its publication as being an excellent explanation for the diversity of living things on our planet, and as time has passed, it has only gained more acceptance. Generally, the only opposition to the theory came from religious circles, who insisted that the world was created in six days and all the animals and plants were created exactly as we see them. While many in the public clung to their beliefs, this obviously did not have much support from the scientific community. After all, there is very little evidence for such a creation, and there is plentiful evidence for evolution. However, in more recent times, other, more legitimate challenges to the Theory of Evolution have surfaced.

This, then, is the goal of my paper: To outline the principle problems with the theory of evolution, the answers presented by the scientific community, and to evaluate the validity of the Theory based on these questions and answers.

During Darwin's lifetime, there was a great deal that science did not know, could not know, about the inner workings and mechanisms of life. Cells themselves had been discovered, but that was about the most anyone could find out about until the invention of the electron microscope, followed by even more advanced devices for detecting things on a microscopic level.

The discoveries that have surfaced as a result of this technology has both helped and hindered Darwin?s Theory. On the one hand, we know much about DNA, the all-important molecule that is the blueprint for the body, and is passed down from generation to generation. It is this inheritance, and the variability of the genetic sequences, that allows for how natural selection acting on variation could actually work. Further, once you allow for the all too frequent advent of mutations in genes, Darwin?s theory becomes very plausible indeed.

On the other hand, this wealth of new information makes us privy to so many complex mechanisms of such an unbelievably fine, elegant construction, many that would have had to exist before that actual origin of life in itself, that one finds it hard to fully believe the Theory of Evolution can have a place today. The Darwinian concept is not one of large jumps, such as, say, having nothing one day and a perfectly functioning eyeball the next, but rather of small steps. If there is a gene that codes for a finger, slight alterations to this gene should allow for a somewhat longer finger. Forelimbs that are flatter and therefore more suited to swimming in a marine creature can become more flat with successive generations. In the billions of years during which life has existed, surely there would be enough time for the development of all the various features we see around us.

There are two large problems with this way of seeing things. The first is that for so many different variations of life to have developed, there would have to be a lot more intermediary life-forms. Granted the less suitable organisms would have eventually died off, but certainly there should at least be some sort of fossil record of all these intermediate creatures.

There is a large and extensive fossil record, but the gaps between more primitive and more advanced forms are very large, and few, if any, intermediates have been found. This is a great puzzle to science. Drs Elliot and Gould theorized one possible answer, now known as the theory of Punctuated Equilibrium. This theory states that evolution takes place in a cycle consisting of a long period of little evolution followed by a relatively short period of much change and evolution, probably caused by large changes in an environment, such as the onset of an ice age or the death of a very large amount of organisms and species, thus clearing much evolutionary space.

By this theory, since the intermediate periods would be so relatively short, the chances of an adequate fossil being preserved are very small, which explains why we don?t have any. The problems with this theory abound. What reason is there for such evolution to occur at this time more than at any other? Richard Dawkins suggests that perhaps there is a gene that causes an increase in mutation rates, but since as a whole this sort of mechanism would tend to be detrimental rather than helpful to most organisms, and it as yet has not been discovered in any case, this would certainly be a very weak foundation upon which to rest a theory.

The other large problem modern science has with evolution is that the simple process of elongating an already existing organ structure would require more than just a simple change in one gene. Take, for example, the lengthening of a finger: bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, skin, and more would have to be altered significantly. Further, such a change would alter the delicate balance of the structure in question. A new balance would have to be achieved. All of these problems would largely been taken care of on a microscopic scale, by a multiplicity of proteins and enzymes. True, proteins and enzymes are what is coded by the genes in DNA, but to create all these proteins, more than one or two genes would need to be changed. At the very least, several dozen simultaneous cooperating mutations would have to take place, and no one needs to be told how unlikely that is.

To elaborate on mutations for a minute, no one argues with the fact that they are almost always detrimental to the organism in question. Even when, by some twist of fate, the mutation happens to be helpful, it is more often because of the malfunction of a particular enzyme that interferes with a process that in the current environment happens to no longer be the preferable way of doing things.

More basic than all of these problems, however, is the simple logical problem. For an organism to benefit from natural selection, it has to develop features that will help it survive and reproduce before the environmental condition that makes it so comes into existence. A gene would have to predict what sort of changes would be beneficial ahead of time.

Evolutionists maintain that this is not in the slightest bit what actually occurs. Mutations occur constantly, most detrimental, as we said, and the rare few that are beneficial just waiting around until they are called for. This argument is very weak for the simple reason that it is very easy to picture life dying out hundreds of times, simply because it never developed the right genes in advance.

The Theory of Evolution is long-standing and widely supported. Questions are just being asked, and there is certainly a good probability that many of them will be answered. This sort of questioning is precisely the sort of approach the that leads to further understanding and discovery in all the fields of science.

I feel that there are clearly some fundamental problems in the current theory of Evolution. There is not question that it at least works on a relatively small scale, within a species. This has been proven without a doubt. It is only with regard to the great diversity of life all around us, the efficiency and intelligence of their mechanisms, and of course their origination?s, that problems arise. In that light, science is doing all it can to find answers. For now, however, the Theory of Evolution is in serious question, and our origins remain unknown.

Aesthetics, showmanship and imagery were held in extremely high regard by American society and money was the means by which it was achieved. The eighties gave birth to a new age of narcissism whose consumptive, materialistic and self-absorbed values were best represented by the “Yuppies”. A young urban professional’s primary goal was to achieve the American dream regardless of the cost. The old adage “the end justifies the means” is best illustrated in Oliver Stone’s film “Wall Street”.

If there is one word that could best sum up the thinking of the decade, it would be “greed”. Movie theatres were filled with films like St. Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Less Than Zero which mirrored the materialistic and egotistical attitudes of the thirty something yuppies of the eighties. And for a number of years, the stars of the same blockbuster films like Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, James Spader, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Demi Moore made headlines both on and off the screen. True to the characters they portrayed on the big screen, they lived life on the fast lane, wore designer jeans, cool shades, and drove fast sports cars on their way to Rodeo Drive. The Brat Pack as they were called paralleled the dreams and dilemmas of young adults in the eighties – how to acquire one’s fair share of the American Dream during a time when an individual’s social standing was so widely scrutinized and overstated.

Nonetheless, the cynical and money-possessed idealism that existed during the decade wasn’t exclusive to Hollywood. On May 18, 1986 Ivan Boesky gave the commencement address at Michael Milkin’s alma mater, the University of California at Berkeley’s business school. “I think greed is healthy,” he told his enthusiastic audience. “You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself” Boesky added. The movie Wall Street begins as a story of a young ambitious stockbroker named Bud Fox played by Charlie Sheen. His highly ambitious upward climb leads him to a predator millionaire Gordon Gekko played by Michael Douglas. Soon afterwards Bud finds himself seduced into the illegal world of insider trading and compromising his deepest moral values to acquire the instant wealth he desires so much.

The film opens by showing Bud Fox working the phones, soliciting new clients for a second tier wall street firm. “Just once, I’d like to be on that side” he says while fiercely looking at the telephone as a client hangs up on him and sticking him with a $7,000 loss. The office scene where Bud Fox works is shown to be loud, grey and sensibly furnished. Furthermore, he shares a small cubicle with another employee that further illustrates his small time status. A big admirer of Gordon Gekko, his persistence pays off as Bud is granted an appointment to meet his hero. Gordon represents everything that Bud dreams of having: the wife, family, limousine, pool, estate and countless priceless art objects. One scene shows the degree of the seductive grasp that Gordon has on Bud. Gordon, while strolling on the beach during the early hours of dawn wakes up Bud with a phone call to pressure him for additional insider corporate information. As the conversation goes on, Gordon reminds Bud of all the perks such as the girl Bud once met at Gordon’s party. “I’m going to make you rich Bud Fox” Gordon says to an extremely awed Bud Fox as the film pans out to show Gordon Gekko standing in front of crashing waves during sunrise. “Now get to work!” Gordon adds just before he hangs up on his cellular phone.

Bud ultimately moves up in the corporate world as his illegal involvement with Gordon Gekko gets deeper. Eventually however, Bud turns things around when he finds himself betraying not only his inner most principles but his very own father when Bud learns of Gordon’s plan of dismantling the airline company he helped him acquire, and consequently the same company Bud’s father works for.

The movie has a traditional plot: The ambitious kid who is so much impressed by the wealth and success of an older man who at first seemed to take him under his wing only to betray and use him.

Oliver Stone successfully delivers his message of depicting the consequence associated with a value system that places wealth and profit above any other consideration. Wall Street challenges us to examine the shady ethics a few are compelled to observe under a ferocious financial competitive atmosphere.

Tartuffe was a funny exciting play starring many talented third year students of theatre. The story was about two in love people, Mariane and Valere, and the way they plot against a hypocrite who is trying to break up their family and send them broke. Tartuffe (Hypocrite) played by Damien Robertson played the character wonderfully and created great dramatic intent.

The story started at Orgons house with Madame Pernell leaving to avoid an argument over the character of Tartuffe and continued on to Cleante and Dorine warning Orgon of Tartuffe. In defiance to the advice organ decides to marry Mariane to Tartuffe. Mariane upset and horrified plots together with Valere. Tartuffe is then caught in the act by Damis after overture to Elmeir. Orgon in denial after hearing of Tartuffe’s behavior decides to leave all of his wordily goods to Tartuffe and marry him to Mariane that night. Family and friends resist this seeming madness and persuade Orgon to allow his wife to try to prove the truth by witnessing Tartuffe’s deceit. Orgon realizes Tartuffe’s malicious intent. Tartuffe then uses Orgons personal papers that had been entrusted to him against Orgon in order to claim his house by a deed he had possession of. In the end Tartuffe’s fraudulent character is revealed and an officer of the king arrests him. The plot is used well to keep the audience’s eyes peeled and used great comedy techniques and dramatic techniques to do this.

Stage space was used well and was occupied most of the time. It consisted of a high stage area, which was centre to the whole stage. The higher stage was placed with stairs left and right and a little door at the front. The higher stage was good as it gave a sense of characters standing on the stage as being superior to people standing below. I thought the stage space could have been spaced out more so that when all of the characters were using the stage at the same time they could be seen from all of the audience’s angles. I thought they used the space well because the characters who were on stage never cluttered in one place. I also think the props on the stage were used well and created a good setting.

Costume design was used wonderfully with creating the setting. The use of the dresses made you see the role in which the females where representing e.g. always having to be covered and coming past the ankles. Males clothing was more the boots and tights which represented the men as ready for battle or to fight e.g. use of the swords. I thought the clothing worked really well with the year it was set in. Lighting also contributed well with the setting and was mainly used to establish the emotions or dramatic scene approaching e.g. the use of flashing light’s to establish a storm or fight. I thought music helped with lighting to establish the scene approaching as it gave you an idea oft the seriousness of the scene.

During Tartuffe I felt as if the scenes before the interval were more interesting as I started to get restless and bored. Before the interval it mainly introduced the characters and the main idea of the play. After the interval more action was used the only problem of this was the audience already new what the characters didn’t so we were basically seeing it all again but with the characters finding out. Overall I thought the begging of the play as the best because this is when we wanted to see more and find out more.

The main theme of the play was that love was to strong to tear Valere and Mariane apart and that lying and hypocrite people won’t leave you as the winner.

Tartuffe was a great dramatic and comedy play, which I really enjoyed. The play was interesting and kept the audience peeled and intrigued most of the time. I would recommend the play to 14 year olds and older and overall showed the social values of the olden days.

There once lived a baby kangaroo, everyone called her Joey. She lived out in Australia, and loved people. Ever since the first day she came into the world her mother knew she would make a difference in so many peoples lives. As she grew older her mother’s prophecy of her child came true day by day. It was as if people were just drawn to her personality. It came to be Joey’s senior year in kangaroo school, when she noticed there was something wrong with the way one of her very good friends was acting.

His name was Mertle, and was a very interesting boy. He was too very much like Joey. In fact the reason they got along so well was probably based on that they were so much alike. Joey knew Mertle inside and out. She knew when something was wrong with him, when he was holding something back from her or even when he was hungry. So she knew that there had to have been something going on in Mertles life that she didn’t know about. When Joey tried to confront Mertle about this however, Mertle got very upset and told her to get out of his face. Now for Joey to hear this coming out of Mertles mouth was very surprising. Joey was shocked after she heard this, and immediately knew something big was wrong. Joey pondered on this situation for a long time until she came to the conclusion that if Mertle wasn’t going to tell her what was wrong she would just have to go on a little investigation.

Joey talked to everyone, Merltes friends, teachers, parents, and even all 29 of his siblings. When she had still gotten nowhere after talking to all these people Joey went to Mertles room. Knowing that this was a very big and risky decision to make, Joey saw it as her last chance to save her best friend from whatever was bothering him. She figured whatever she needed to know had to be somewhere in his room. Feeling really guilty on her way up to his room, because in her heart she didn’t want to invade her best friends privacy, something caught her attention. Right when Joey was going to open the door to Mertles room, she heard Merltes voice coming from inside it. Joey quickly turned around until she heard her name come from Merltes mouth. She turned her head towards the door again and then heard the most horrible thing come from Mertle. He said, “Joey, Oh she’s not my friend, where did you hear that from? I’m just nice to her to make her happy.” When she hear these words tears ran down her cheeks and down onto the floor. At that very moment Joey and Mertle made eye contact through the crack of his door. When Mertle saw how sad he had made Joey he was speechless, and could not say a word to her. Joey left that day very sad, and confused. She never did learn why Mertle had said those things about her, because Mertle could never look into her eyes after that day.

10 years later: Joey is a successful counselor who helps people out with their problems and still enjoys peoples company. Mertle on the other hand became a butcher because he never got past what happened between with him and Joey therefore never making a new friend the rest of his lonely life.
