The moral discussion of abortion centers on the issue of whether or not abortion is an act of murder. Abortion will always deal with what it is to create and sustain life; it will always be a moral issue. Whether we like it or not, our moral thinking about abortion is perception (Gordon 169-170). The president of the United States is now trying to change the abortion laws made from the ruling Roe v. Wade on January 22, 1973. Since that ruling, the abortion rate has rose sharply. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which is considered by anti-abortion and abortion rights groups to be the most accurate source. It peaked at 29.3 per 1,000 women between the ages 15 and 44 in 1981, and began to drop in 1992, and stands at 21.3("New York Times, 20 January 2003"). Eighteen states now require a waiting period before performing an abortion. Some states also have parental consent if girls are under the age of eighteen. I believe that even though President Bush is going to change the laws about abortions, he cannot completely stop them from happening. If he banned abortion in the United States, then more people would be doing it themselves and catching diseases or going to an underground doctors clinic getting one. I am a strong believer in abortion because I feel that it is the woman who should decide, not what the president wants or what someone else wants, but what is right for yourself, and no one else.

I believe that there should be some more strict laws for getting an abortion, but I also believe in it as well. I think there should be a limit as to the number of abortions 1 person can get. If a woman gets 3 in one year, then she needs to get her priorities straight and think twice about having sex without contraceptives. By making stricter laws, more women might not be able to get an abortion which leads to unwanted neglected children and a bigger strain on the economy by putting these poor mothers with un wanted children on welfare. In Pennsylvania 75 percent of Pennsylvania counties have no abortion provider.

Between 1992 and 1996, the number of providers fell from 81 to 61 a 25 percent loss ("NARAL"). With the number of decreasing abortion clinics in Pennsylvania, it forces women to go out of state and follow their rules. That is why other states have such a high increase in abortion.

With everything that is going on about abortion, the laws will probably change, but there is a slight chance they won't. In 2004, I feel that the election is going to be primarily on abortion and all the issues that surround it. Some people need to realize that all women should have the right to do anything to their bodies because it is there and they have to live with the decision. If a woman should choose to have an abortion, then she probably has her reasons. Abortion isn't a matter of "I just didn't want the baby." The issue is greater than that. Most of the reasons include: financial problems, not physically or mentally ready, or they are not mature enough.

Always make the right decision when it comes to abortion. Women should think over everything before they come to the decision on whether or not to go through with it.

The summer of 2000 was a summer of numerous adventures for my friends and me. You name it and we did it, from pranking our pastor to camping out in each other's backyard. Sometimes the girls would prank the guys, but then the guys would turn right around and retaliate. This would go back and forth till someone would say, "Hey, let's quit this for a while!"

One particular time my friend, Christina, and I were camping in my back yard on, what felt like, the hottest night of the summer. Christina decided that she was going to spend the night with me. I didn't care a bit for her spending the night, but the next thing she wanted to do was stay in my camper in my back yard. We had talked about staying a night in there, but I wanted electricity and water. Oh, but no, Christina wanted to stay in it, didn't matter about life's little perks.

She said, "Oh, Christie, come on if I can stand not having a shower or air conditioning I know you can!"

Well, she was right I could do it, but in the back of my head I was thinking "Oh no, the boys will come and try to prank us if they know we are out there." But if they did we would just have to get them back. I didn't worry about it any more that night, so that's what we did! We camped out in my back yard in the camper.

After we had gotten our pajamas on and eaten our last meal of the night we took a little hike to my back yard to what would be our shelter for the night. It was a pretty good size camper that can hold about six people comfortably, but it was just us two girls roughing it.

The first thing we did was we turn a light on and opened every window possible. Then we just sat and talked about everything known to man. This conversation was going to be extra special due-to Christina had a crush on Jonathan, one of our mutual friends.

"Why in the world do I like Jon, Christie? I mean, I have grown up with him and for some reason have grown to like him!" Christina said.
"I don't know, Sis. But you to do look like you all are having fun together."

As the conversation became a tell-all about who each of us thought was cute or cool to hang out with or just plain ola weird, Christina squealed like a pig in a greased pig contest over a big moth flying into the screen of the window beside her.

"I'm such a scaredy cat," Christina said, embarrassed.
"HA HA!! And you were the one who wanted to come out here!"
"Oh shut up! It was just a bug. OKAY!"

After we calmed down we went right back on talking about the boys. Then once again Christina, now slightly paranoid, looked at me and said, "Did you hear that?"
"Uhhh - no. I can't hear anything. Quit breathing so hard! What did it sound like?
"It sounded like Jon laughing."

At this point I thought she was just trying to make me as scared as she was. But it didn't work on me. I'm smarter then the average girl.

All-of-the-sudden something hit the roof of the camper. The camper was under a tree, so I thought "Oh it's just a nut or something falling off and landing on the roof." Then about four noises that sounded like someone was coming from my back porch. Then we realized that oh gosh someone is out there. Christina decided to turn off the light in the camper to see if the moon could help us see who it was. Next thing that happened was the camper started to rock back and forth. And once again I heard much laughter cause by this time I was standing up looking out of the window, and the rocking made me hit my head on the window pane.

So I yelled, "Hello, Jon."
"I'm not Jon." said Justin, Jon's friend.
"Oh really!"
"Couldn't tell ya. Ha ha!"

By this time Christina was freaking out, locking the door and attempting to shut every window in the camper.

"Why are you shutting the windows? If you do that it will get hotter in here, and we are already down to our panties and bras!"
"Where they won't reach in and get us."
"Tina Lea, your crazy!"

By this time the boys knew we knew who they were. They kept doing stuff to the camper.
Unexpectedly, a large tan hand smacked the window pane behind Christina's head. It was our other friend Brian. This was the time the boys did something that scared me because I wasn't expecting it.

Then next thing we knew everything was quiet: the type of eerie silence that makes you overly paranoid. We decided to try to go to sleep in our rather warm shelter.

"Hey hey ,you all asleep?" said Jon.

We were silent. Hopefully, they would think we were asleep and leave. But no, they stayed there and talked about us. It was very interesting to hear what guys think about girls.
Well, we gave up our acting trick and talked to them.

"So how did we do?" asked Justin.
"Well, you all did okay for three clumsy boys," Christina said harshly.

We talked for about an half an hour and the boys stood up and told us bye and ran away. We had no idea what was going on or the reason why they left so quickly.

The next day I found out they ran because they thought they had heard my back door open. I thought I would get in trouble for letting them stay and talk to us. I told them to leave and not come back for the rest of the night. They didn't and we got a good nights rest.
As we looked back on this night back in 2000 we realized that that summer was the best summer of our lives. Because we spent it together and had tons of fun. That summer will be the summer I tell the grandkids about!!

In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, three characters prophesy the death of Caesar. Even though Caesar was warned of these predictions, he ignored them. Caesar's ambitious behaviors caused him to ignore these signs. According to the play, Caesar's death is prophesied; Casca tells about some strange and prophetic things he has seen, Calphurnia dreams ominous nightmares, and a soothsayer, Artemidorus, and a priest try to warn Caesar.

Early in the play, Casca tells Cicero of omens that he claims to have seen. He tells of fire falling from the sky. "Against the Capitol I met a lion, who glazed upon me and went surely by without annoying me"(789). He sees a slave whose arm was on fire, but was not scorched. "And yesterday the bird of night did sit even at noonday upon the marketplace"(789). The owl is always considered a bad omen when seen in the daytime. Casca also met a group of women who swear they see a group of men, on fire, walking the streets. These unnatural occurrences convince Casca that these are warnings from the gods.

Caesar's wife, Calphurnia, also prophesies Caesar's death. She wakes up three times from nightmares portraying Caesar's death. Like Casca, she sees a lion in the streets, except it is giving birth. She also claims that "graves have yawned, and yielded up their dead"(812). She dreams of fire falling from the sky, like Casca. Another strong omen is when Calphurnia dreams of blood running down the wall of the Capitol. She sees a fountain of Caesar, running blood out of the spouts. "[Calphurnia] dreamt tonight she saw my statue, which like a fountain with an hundred spouts, did run pure blood"(813). The Romans then smilingly washed their hands in the blood. This worries Calphurnia so much that she tries to convince Caesar to stay away from the capital.

A soothsayer tries to warn Caesar about his murder. At the very beginning of the play, the soothsayer tells Caesar to "Beware the Ides of March"(779). However, Caesar took this as a joke and ignored the soothsayer. Both soothsayer and Artemidorus try to warn Caesar, but their attempts fail. Artemidorus writes a letter to Caesar containing the names of all the conspirators. "If thou read this, O Caesar, thou mayest live; If not, the Fates with traitors do contrive"(815). After Calphurnia's bad dream, Caesar sends a priest to make a sacrifice to appease the gods. The priest comes back saying that he could find no heart in the animal that was sacrificed. This gives the priest good reason to advise Caesar to stay home.

Caesar's death if prophesied by omens told by Casca's observances, Calphurnia's dream, and by a soothsayer, Artemodorus, and a priest. Caesar's ambitious behavior prevents him from believing these omens. These prophecies were definite signs of something bad to come. Calphurnia's dreams directed the omen's meaning toward Caesar. If Caesar would have accepted these omens, he could have avoided the events that led to his death.

There are events in an individual's life when they have to accept something just for what it is. As hard as it may be to swallow it, complaining or commenting on it to improve it would not be acceptable. Death, in the novel, Slaughterhouse Five, is depicted as a part of the book that the characters have to accept in order to move on with their lives. Billy Pilgrim, the main character of Slaughterhouse Five, is shown a life of acceptance with a quote about the world's conclusion, the Tralfamadorians, and by the frequently used phrase, "so it goes."

Before realizing that death is a mere moment in life, Billy shows fear of the end of the universe,

"How-how does the Universe end?" said Billy.
"We blow it up, experimenting with new fuels for our flying saucers. A Tralfamadorian test pilot presses a starter button, and the whole Universe disappears." So it goes.
"If you know this," said Billy, "isn't there some way you can prevent it? Can't you keep the pilot from pressing the button?"
"He has always pressed it, and he always will. We always let him and we always will let him. The moment is structured that way."

Billy's mindset was only focused on the life after death, or what would happen to him after he had taken his last breath, but he soon finds out that its no use of thinking those thoughts. Fearing death was simply an obstacle that Billy had to conquer in order to find that death was just a moment in time. The Tralfamadorians meant that there was no reason why one should cling onto life and death. They have known that death is only a part of life, and to share this good news, they chose Billy to illustrate their views to others of this world. Next, the Tralfamadorians want is for the people of earth to "Ignore the awful times, and concentrate on the good ones" since life on earth is only a part of a cycle (117). By ignoring the awful times, people would be able to live a life of happiness, which is demonstrated throughout this book by Billy. If one is willing to believe that the idea of acceptance is based on their mindset, the Tralfamadorians would have done their job. After understanding the words of the Tralfamadorians, Billy states, "Now, when I myself hear that somebody is dead, I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is "So it goes"" (27). This relates to the power that the Tralfamadorians have on Billy as the deaths of Billy's loved ones would not matter to him, as he would just shake it off and move on. The lesson that the Tralfamadorians give greatly impacts Billy and gives him a whole new perspective of the world. If the Tralfamadorians were not a part of this book, the plot would have been a life of a normal man living in a time of war.

As this book takes place during wartime, deaths are frequent in this novel. Billy experiences these deaths, and he learns to say, "so it goes" and move on with his life. After his plane crash, the narrator explains, "While Billy was recuperating in a hospital in Vermont, his wife died accidentally of carbon-monoxide poisoning. So it goes," bringing up one of the earlier deaths of this book (25). This event is obviously a tragic part of this book as Billy's wife, Valencia, passes away. But when Billy finds out, he does not show a sign of tears or sadness about this heartbreaking event. He moves on as he knows to concentrate on the joyous times of life, not times of losing loved ones, Valencia, being an example. After a time of bombing, Billy hears that, "The atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed 71,379 people. So it goes" (p. 188). This time, a mass population of lives was gone; yet, it did not bother Billy at all. A similar incident happened when Billy was at Dresden, but since he survives it, he carries on, forgetting what just happened and visits a motel close by. Finally, Billy hears that Charles Darwin had said, "Who taught that those who die are meant to die, that corpses are improvements. So it goes" and Billy seems to agree with this opinion (210). The corpses in this quote refer to moment in life when we realize that death is only an instant, revealing the cycle in life. Though death might be a tragedy or a misfortune, the Tralfamadorians teach Billy, that death is not the end, but is a mere moment in life. Death is always an issue that is very hard to let go, especially if it is of someone you deeply care about, but in this book, Billy demonstrates how it is no use of clinging onto someone's death, but to move on with our lives.

The block quote of earth's conclusion, the Tralfamadorians, and the quote, "so it goes" was the three main ideas of acceptance in this book. We all know that this book is fiction, but if in fact death was merely a moment in time, we would be as calm as Billy was about death, as we would not have any worries of how our lives would conclude. It is even hard to swallow the fact that death can be a moment in time, but no one would ever find out until they experience death themselves.

Gays and lesbians have become increasingly accepted by society. There are many more gay communities, facilities, and organizations than ever before and the number is rising. When did gay activity evolve into a lifestyle? John D'Emilio pondered this very question when he formulated his essay, "Capitalism and Gay Identity." D'Emilio argues that the development of capitalism, and its free labor system, has allowed gays and lesbians to create a "homosexual identity" (229), opposing the belief that this identity has always existed for them. D'Emilio makes his points clear and convincing, although he omits many other factors that led to this revolution. The reader can then argue that although capitalism is one of the factors delineating a gay identity, others are overlooked in D'Emilio's attempt to make a clear correlation between capitalism and gay identity.

D'Emilio makes a clear distinction between homosexual behavior and gay identity. He admits that there have always been homosexuals, but the identity he speaks of comes from a society that allows them to exist. He points out that in colonial years, society lacked the terms to even acknowledge homosexuals. They referred to this activity as "sodomy among men" (229) and "lewdness among women" (229). In certain states, laws forced unmarried adults to live in "family units"(229) and they were unable to make a way of life through their attractions.

With technological advances and free labor, individuals were forced out of their current lifestyles, and into the work force. People were therefore more able to make same sex relationships with people in the workplace, encouraging gay activity to progress into an everyday life, rather than an unspoken activity. Family units were no longer necessary for survival, and people had the option of being single for the first time. Slowly but surely, the role of sex in people's lives began to change. Relationships turned away from the need to procreate and "became a means of establishing intimacy, promoting happiness, and experiencing pleasure" (229). Although it had always been a pleasurable experience, the main concern was having children. This was no longer the case. People could have sex for only the enjoyment they obtained. In this way, people were encouraged to find mates who enjoyed the same things as them. D'Emilio reasons that this supported those who were gay to express it, and gave them an outlet to form a life in society. It gradually became more acceptable to have a mate of the same sex.

However, D'Emilio's insinuation that capitalism was the only cause of the breakdown of family life, and his presumption that this breakdown was the sole reason for homosexual existence in society is inaccurate. He makes many claims that seem absurd to the reader. For example, he claims that "college educated white women could survive more easily without intimate relationships with men" (231). He gives no recognition to any other factors that may have been involved. Just because these women may be more able to support themselves, they become lesbians? Why does D'Emilio single out white women? In another example, D'Emilio claims World War II "freed men and women from the setting where heterosexuality was normally imposed" (231). How can a war account for all gays and lesbians coming out? This seems to be a flimsy argument at best.

As one can easily see, capitalism did influence the societal changes that account for today's gay identity, but it was not the only factor in this transformation. Progression from all aspects of life is the true motivator of social change. As D'Emilio says, gay identity is "a product of history"(227), but no one segment can fully explain its formation or its solidity. Gays and lesbians can now coexist with society, and find their role in it, based on this newfound identity.
