Essay on Bali

Essay on Bali

You know, I have been worrying about the flights to Bali. My kids kept on saying that they were afraid of ear ache on landing, and that they wanted to take one flight instead of two to go to Bali. Why two? Because we have to change flight in Singapore to save money. But miracles happened. The computer game (Nintendo?) kept them busy all the way on the flight and they had totally forgotten landing ear ache!!

We arrived late in Bali airport. To my surprise, it was quite a modern airport. Everything was so efficient. Soon we arrived at the hotel and we were welcomed with warm smiles and flower rings. The hotel room was quite nice and spacious. There were three beds, two bigger and one smaller beds. How should we share our beds - four people and three beds? I guess each one should have three quarters of a bed then. It turned out that the two kids each got a bed. Katherine and I only got half bed each. That is unfair!

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Bali for You!

Well, the unfair feeling went away on the next day when we spent a whole day enjoying and relaxing in the hotel, in particular, around the swimming pools. We swam underneath a waterfall, dived deep into the pool bottom of two meters deep. The water slides produced lots of excitement to my kids. They kept on sliding and sliding, with their heads up, heads down, bottoms up and bottoms down.

The scenery around the hotel was great too. It was located at the edge of a bluff facing the ocean. Big rocks was lying at the coast-line at the beach beneath the bluff with waves striking them repeatedly. It was spectacular. The bad thing is that it was unsafe to swim there, otherwise I would have swum in the Indian Ocean - for the first time ever.

Food is good in Bali too. The hotel buffet breakfast was one of the best I ever have and there were little repetition for my three days stay. In particular I enjoyed the papaya juice and mango yogurt very much. Katherine couldn-t stop eating too. Though I often persuade her not to eat too much, I couldn-t do that this time for the food was so delicious. Katherine found the best passion fruit we ever have and we managed to bring some home too!

Seafood dinner at the Jimbaran Bay was another experience. Have you ever dine on a sandy beach facing the sunset? Yes, it was what we have. Very romantic, isn't it - except that you still have to take care of two boys who kept on complaining the lobsters, the crabs and the fish too hot, though Katherine and I enjoyed very much. Another thing - the restaurant was not too honest, they overweighed the seafood. It made us upset for a while but the delicious seafood had somehow comforted us.

Remember I've said the beach beneath the hotel bluff is very beautiful but unsafe to swim? Actually there is another private hotel beach just a little bit farther away. When we arrive there, the scenery caught our eyes - it was as beautiful as the world famous twelve disciple rocks of Australia!! We were served like kings there too. The hotel staff served us with cool towels, cold water skin soothing apparatus, fruits and even beach toys. Lewis originally was not keen to go to the beach, but now he was enjoying the waves and the sands as much as his brother Adrian.

Bali was more than just sunshine and beach. That afternoon, we went to see some culture of Bali. We saw Bali buildings and temples, we walked through Balinese local markets бV fruits and vegetables, birds and monkeys, and even fighting cocks. I learned from our taxi driver that the Philippine fighting cocks are better fighters because he owns both Balinese and Philippine fighting cocks.

We arrived on time at the Sea God Temple (Tenan Lot) trying to catch the famous sunset scene. It had not disappointed us. But more than that, we found the landscape was also very beautiful. The kids were very excited with a big school of bats flying out from a sea cave nearby at the moment the sun fell below the horizon. Catherine asked me why I said they were bats. I said, “Trust me, for I just know” Did I sound like Dori?

The story of our trip to Bali ended the next morning. Adrian, woke up on his bed, asked, “When will we come back?” I replied, “Where shall you go - Sabah or Bali?” He said, “For even years - Sabah, odd years - Bali”. Are we?

Essay on Greece

Essay on Greece

Greece
Greece is a small country where the first European civilization started more than 2,000 year ago. During that period, Greece controlled much of the land bordering, the mediterranean, and black sea. Nowadays, It has little power, and is one of the least developed countries. However, Greece has a great Interested history such as political, culture, and religion.

Political
400 years ago, Greece was constituted from many small kingdoms. 1,000 years later, they were powerful, but they had to face with wars and famine so that people struggled to survive. By 800 BC, people ‘s life begun to be better because Greece was divided into city state instead of kingdoms; Athens was the biggest city since this time. In each city had an area called the acropolis where was usually the highest place in the city. The Ancient Greeks built a temple in the acropolis for honour of god and goddess. At first the city states except Spatar were governed by group of noblemen. After that, the other powerful men, such as merchants and craftmen, began to demand how the stated were run. Therefore, the trouble occurred again in Ancient Greece.

By year 650 BC, Tyrants was a group of people who thought that It would be better to preside by the powerful man who could keep everyone in order because people had had enough of different groups fighting for controlling Greece. They then was aware of Tyrants was not appropriate rule for them. In 500 BC, people of Athens decided to govern their city in a new way, so they held elections, and all the citizens voted for men they required to manage the city. This was the first democracy since then. By that time, women, slaves and people who born outside the state could not be citizens. It suggested that political changes were created for developing country.

Culture
Greeks house were usually built around courtyard. Rich families had a well to use at home, while poor families could not afford their own well had to fetch water from a public fountain. When babies were born, they were shown to their fathers. If fathers satisfied with them, so they were allowed to live. If not, or if they seemed not to be healthy they were left outside to die. When babies were seven days old, their families arranged a party and gave the baby gifts. When they were ten days old, fathers had to give a name. Poor boys were not able to go to school, whereas richer boys began to study at seven years old. They almost stayed at school until 18 years old. Then they had to participate military training. Girls did not go to school because they had to learn how to look after home instead. Greeks citizens aged 20 - 50 years old must be prepare themselves to go and fight if country had a war so that life became very difficult for women and children in case men in the family were killed.

Religion
Religion was very important for families. They prayed to the god at home every day. The father of family led the prayers, while women made offering at the family altar in the courtyard. Some of special event, for example, wedding ceremony always took place at home, but sometimes they went to a temple. When a festival took place in honour of a god and goddess, a grand procession walked through the city to the temple. After people died, their bodies were buried or burnt. Those bodies or ashes were placed in tombs because most people believed that their soul had to cross the river of death called River Styx. A ferryman called Charon would take them across in his boat, as long as their relative remembered to put a coin to pay him.

Finally, Greece had the most famous occasion was the Olympic Games, which arranged at olympia in honour of Zeus, but It stopped later by Christian Emperor "Theodosius” in AD 394 because they were to worship a Greeks god until French sportman Baron de Coubertin, organised the game at Athens in1896 since then, the Olympic Games have arranged every four years, in different countries.

Although now Greece has become a small country, it had generated civilization in the world.

Essay on Croatia

Essay on Croatia

On the Adriatic coastline in southern Europe is a hidden gem full of majestic mountains, classic cities and sparkling beaches. Although it may seem like a beautiful vacation, only ten years ago Croatia was a deeply war stricken country.

Rebuilding the country has been a challenging task for the governments and only now do they believe that they are ready for international relations. Before anyone can judge the situation they must look at the plethora of problems in the past and present, perspective of other European nations and the changes in the country which are helping its cause. Despite current instability and tensions, Croatia is still a favored nation to be accepted as a part of the European Union. In the past decade of Croatia’s independence they have had considerable problems with their governments.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Croatia for You!

As a result it is crucial to look at the government, furthermore its issues from the past and leading into the present. At the time of independence in 1991 the ruling political party in the country was the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), lead by authoritarian president Franjo Tudjman. He had brought victory to his nation during the war and was praised by many, yet his corruptness slowly leaked out into public view. Economic troubles plagued the nation with “unemployment rates reaching roughly 20% at the time” (Author not available, Analysis: Croatian Politics and economy) and it was, for the most part, blamed on “human and civil rights abuses, sheltering of war criminals, mismanagement and virulent nationalism”. (Author not available, Analysis: Croatian Politics and economy) With the HDZ having a tight grip on the nation, its standards of living were slowly declining and many people were living below the poverty line while their leaders were the richest tycoons. Although the Croatian people saw this happening they still maintained support because of propaganda by their leaders through state owned television and radio. Only recently have the people decided to elect a truly democratic government after Tudjman had passed away. The economic footprint left by the former government will take years to fix and is hindering Croatia’s success with respect to the European Union.

Unfortunately, the mistakes of the past are sometimes shadowed by the current problems with war criminals During the civil war many of Croatia’s top military leader’s were accused of committing war crimes. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has been requesting that certain military leaders be extradited to The Hague, an international court, so they can stand trial for anything they may have done. Although this is not as widely publicized as Serbian President Milosevic, it did raise suspicions when the government decided that they would not send all of them. The two men in particular would be Generals Janko Bobetko and Ante Gotovina. Bobetko is recovering from a double heart by-pass operation at the age of 84 and the other, according to Croatian officials, is not in the country. (Author not available, EU/CROATIA: Membership Application by the End of February) A large reason for the government’s decisions is the pressure from nationalists who don’t believe in sending its soldiers to be punished for protecting their country.

“When current president Stipe Mesic announced that his government would have to extradite war criminals it sparked a crisis that almost lead to the fall of the pro-western democratic government after only 18 months in power”. (Author not available, Croatian Government Teeters) These are two of the major complicated issues surrounding the controversy of Croatia’s entrance. The Croatian government has made some movement to eradicate the mistakes of the past and has been successful. Other European nations have noticed this success and are pushing with Croatia to help them attain European Union membership. “At the recent summit of the Quadrilateral, leaders from Italy, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia gathered in Zagreb and adopted a joint statement which notes full support to Croatia’s bid to join the Union. Prime Minister Ivica Racan felt that his country had an exceptional chance and described the meetings as “substantial and successful”. He feels that the EU’s open door policy is key for countries to solve their current problems in hopes of getting the offer of integration into Europe.”(Author not available, Summit adopts joint statement approving Croatia's EU entry) Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berusconi assured Racan that Italy would fully support Croatia to become full EU and NATO members however possible. The support showed by fellow nations is a clear indicator that Croatia is ready to step up to the European Union and help develop itself and Europe for the better. In the process of becoming a member of the European Union, Croatia must meet the criteria and keep improving itself to show long-term commitment.

“In the year 2000, Croatia signed a financing memorandum with respect to the EU technical assistance support program. This shows that the EU is aiming towards Croatia entrance. The program was set up to target the improvement of the country’s state administration bodies. These include strengthening the legal structure in the country to be in line with EU regulations and attacking specific problems in the different ministries throughout the government”. (Author not available, More Technical Assistance to Hasten Croatia in EU Fold) The results have been impressive with the rebuilding of the national highway and a strengthened tourism department which is slowly putting Croatia on the map.

“Croatia recently joined the World Trade Organization, signed a stabilization and association agreement with the EU and is push towards entering NATO”. (Author not available, Analysis: Croatian politics and economy) These are some of the key steps that Croatia has taken to strengthen their country and chance of entering the EU. The acceptance into the European Union is a goal that all aspiring European nations wish to achieve. It is a step forward in terms of economic and political stability as well it shows that people around the world are ready to unite and take on the future as one. These reasons alone are grounds for Croatia trying to gain admission.

They see the benefits of joining and are embracing change to better the nation. Although skeptics may say they have their faults but most nations do and it’s important look at the positive side of their entry. It is more than apparent that Croatia is, despite their problems, ready to join the EU in hopes of uniting themselves with the best that continent has to offer.

The name less frequently used in Thailand called The Kingdom Of Thailand, and the more frequently used name is Thailand. The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, and the initials are TH. One of the things citizens of Thailand takes pride in is that they were never colonized. They withheld their country and became a nation in 1238 having a strong country and not being defeated by the British.

The way that the country gets around is the same way we get around. Their cars are as modern as ours, and many people use them to for daily transportation. They have 3,940 km. of railways in the entire country. They also have highways like us but not some of them. Some of our highways are in not so good of shape. Do to the fact of being popular, service sites are located all around the country. People go to Thailand on holidays like New Years Eve, and New Years Day. The others that have nothing in common to what we celebrate are Chakri Day, National Labour Day in May, Coronation, Mid Year Day, H. M. the Queens Birthday, Chulalongkorn Day, H.M. the King’s Birthday, and Constitution Day.

Thailand’s geography is relatively good when compared to different parts of the world. They have normal tropical weather and its land is mostly flat with some mountain ranges. Their government is different than ours. Ours is a democracy and theirs is a Constitutional Monarchy.

They have a King and Queen and we have a president. So, the U.S. has different way of dealing with their government than Thailand. They have a lot of exports from countries and get lots of imports too. Their economy is as good or bad as the rest of the world. It’s average at this point in time. Essay on Latvia History

Essay on Latvia

In the 800s, the Vikings raided Latvia. In the 900s, the Russian Forces attacked Latvia several times. The Teutonic Knights were an organization of German crusaders.

They invaded Latvia in the 1200s. The Latvians finally surrendered in the late 1200s. The knights then governed Latvia for over 200 years. Latvia was part of a larger state called Livonia. By 1562, most of Latvia had come under the rule of Poland and Lithuania. In 1621, Sweden conquered northern Latvia. In 1710, Russia took control over this area. By 1800 Russia ruled all of Latvia, but German merchants and landowners in Latvia continued to hold much political power.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Latvia for You!

During the late 1800s, the Latvians began to organize an independence movement. This movement took action in the early 1900s, because the Russian and German authority declined in Latvia. They proclaimed independent just after the end of World War I, on November 18, 1918. Then in 1922, they adopted a constitution that established a democratic form of government. They passed land reform laws that divided large estates that were owned by the few wealthy people, and distributed it into farms given to poorer citizens. When the president seized power, he reduced the parliament's power and the rights of political parties. In 1939, the Soviet Union made Latvia sign a treaty that let the Soviets build military bases in Latvia.

In June 1940, the soviet troops occupied Latvia, and the communists took over the government. In August, the Soviets made Latvia part of the Soviet Union. German forces invaded Latvia in 1941, and occupied it until 1944, when the Soviets recaptured it. Many Latvians tried to fight back, but they failed. The Soviet Union took control of all industry and land, and established a powerful communist government. The Latvians didn't like the Soviets ruling their country, so they organized a non-communist organization called the "Popular Front" in 1988. This organization elected representatives to the Soviet parliament created in 1989. The government of the republic agreed to restore the national Latvian flag and anthem, which had been banned, and they also allowed freedom to the press and to religious groups. They also changed the official language from Russian to Latvian.

In late December of 1989, Latvia's parliament voted to end the communist party's monopoly on power. The Latvians wanted independence from the Soviet Union. In January 1991, the Soviets raided the headquarters of the Latvian Interior Ministry, killing four people. In August 1991, some communist officials tried to overthrow Gorbachev and take over the Soviet central government, but failed to do so. During this incidence, the Latvian parliament declared independence. Then the Soviet Union recognized Latvian's independence and finally left.

Essay on Romania

Essay on Romania

Roughly thirteen years ago on December 22nd 1989 Nicolae Ceausescu communist dictator of Romania was captured in a bloody revolution which coasted the lives of 1104 Romanians.

Three days later on Christmas Day along side his wife Nicolae Ceausescu was tried and executed by firing squad in the cold streets of Bucharest found guilty for suppressing the people of Romania for twenty-one years, using secrete police to silence political enemies, and ordering his army to kill 60,000 people. While Nicolae drank fine wine and resided in a palace Romanians loitered in the streets of Bucharest protesting with signs with “We Want Bread” written on them.

Nicolae ordered the army to shoot and kill all protestors in Bucharest but it was too late. The army knew his time was over and neglected to follow orders. Nicolae went to his officers personally and demanded them o fire on the protestors declaring them enemies of the state and they did so killing around 100 citizens although the reported number of 400 was inflated. Since then Romania’s economy has fallen to three-fourths its former strength. Romania has been through several successful elections.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Romania for You!

Romania one of many countries awaiting the benediction of Western Europe for membership into the European Union takes extreme actions to please Western figure heads; especially France at the expense of limited freedom focused towards their own people. Gypsy populations located primarily in the northern region of Romania mainly in the towns of Dioszeg, Boros and Oradea are denied passage by their own Romanian customs. Prior to January 2001 Gypsies had the privilege of traveling the entire continent of Europe with but a meager form of picture identification. Recent measures to keep Romanian Gypsies off the roam included showing that citizens carry at least five hundred dollars with them in order to cross into neighboring European countries, hoping to keep Gypsy thieves out of Paris. Romanian Boarder Guards strictly enforce and uphold this law. Few Gypsies make wages more than sixty dollars a month, and many Romanian Gypsies work in neighboring Hungary and Bulgaria leaving their families for several weeks to earn higher wages, and will no longer be able to support their families. Many Gypsies have saved their monthly earnings obtained valid passports and visas but were only told to return to their whoring mother by Romanian guards. Many Gypsies call Ion Iliescu President of Romania the French lap dog . On the other end in Paris there is less report of Gypsy prostitution, theft, and robbery. Officials in Paris are pleased with the results and encourage more measures to keep roaming Romanians at home. Although entrance into the European Union will bring about a economic golden age for laggard Romania and allow all Romanian citizens to travel as far as London without ever being asked to show a passport or deal with a customs agent. Ion Iliescu must decided if sacrifice now will improve relations with France allowing them entry into the European Union, however the situation is grim Ion’s dream of a greater Romania a member of the European Union may not occur this decade.

Regardless to Romania’s efforts the race may in fact be in vein with France standing proud and Gaul in the way holding the keys to the gate to the European Union. France one of the major players in the European Union has been hinting for the past three years that it simply does not want to expand the European Union. Should the European Union extend its boarders east France’s personal interest fall out the window. The European Union since day one has been driven by the Frenchmen on a German work horse. France took advantage of this situation resulting in large economic growth for France. De Gaul made sure France would stay on top disallowing the United Kingdom entry into the European Union but the United Kingdom could only be held back for so long. Once the United Kingdom entered the European Union the U.K became a major player in foreign affairs and expansion which the U.K heavily supported. The fall of the Berlin Wall threw France off the German horse bringing about a Greater Germany. Not only did the Berlin Wall fall but the Iron Curtain fell as well ending the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Now Greater Germany took advantage of Eastern Europe opening the father lands doors to all nations causing an economic golden age. Not only will it be a British victory of expansion but Germany will have free trade with neighboring Eastern European nations making Germany the true center hub of industry and economics. Surely expansion of the European Union will bring about a British-German partnership and demote France to the rank of nations like Italy and Spain which would be an insult to the very nation that created the European Union. As long as France holds the power to veto on the European Union Commission France plans to do so unless the opportunity arises that Eastern European countries addition will benefit France.

Romania returning to Prague for the first time since 1968 where Romania rejected the Warsaw Pact holds a certain sentimental value considering Romania a former strong rouge Communist country now crosses polar barrier joining the nations that stood against everything Communism discredited; the anathema of governments. This time Romania treks to Prague to join the most powerful nations in the world as a democracy to uphold all that it credits throughout the globe. Although Romania may be a small country with a military funds just fewer than 1 billion dollars Romania has a strong military history and enthusiastic about development of a rapid response team unlike other reluctant current NATO nations refusing to spend more government funds on war. Romania the larger of the Balkan states stands as the eastern flank of Europe and will act as a staging point should the new Islamic Republic of Turkey turn sour towards the west.

Also Romania lies in vital position to protect future oil pipeline projects which will bridge Europe to the central Asian states of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan which has been impossible until only now.

Romania also holds a key tactical location off the Black Sea which is a major route for smugglers entering from turkey. Romania has already commenced war games with the United States to take place in the Black Sea with old 1980 built destroyers. Alex Gobjila a young officer aboard a Romanian mine sweeper commented “We are looking at the United States as a close Friend, It is important always to have a good friend.” A retired Romanian politician remarked “We play the American card aggressively.” The Romanian Navy is very pleased and looks forward to closer military ties with the United States. Romania committed some one-thousand peace keeping troops to Afghanistan and plans to send more in early 2003. During the air war of Operation Enduring Freedom two hundred American troops and pilots were given access to a Romanian air base used to refuel American aircraft. Although it is doubtful that Romania will commit troops to Iraq Romania has already granted America access to several airbases in the event of a second war in the gulf.

With all of these new cards in Romania’s hand it’s difficult for Romania to select which card would bring Romania’s citizens over the poverty line. With a closer American ally Romania has begun to look towards American politics and policies to please the new big brother nation. Recently Romania has adopted an American Criminal Court policy breaking from common European solidarity. Europe was outraged by the move. The European Union Committee has noted “The nations' desire to join by 2007 must make a commitment to help them achieve that goal.” Later the European Union’s chief in Romania said, “There has got to be a shifting of gears in Romania. Romania will not survive without accomplishing transition.”
