Essay on Oskar Schindler Biography

Oskar Schindler Biography Essay

In the autumn of 1943 Oskar Schindler lives in Krakow. His wife, Emilie, lives in his home tows of Zwittau in Moravia. He’s on his way to a party with commandant Amon Goeth who is in charge of the forced labour camp at Plaszow. In this camp there are 20.000 Jews, Poles and Gypsies. For some Germans at the party Schindler has brought gifts because he may need their support later on. On his way out he talks to the Jewish kitchen maid. She’s treated badly and gives him money so that he can do something for her sister if she’s put on a transport.

After the German occupation of Sudetenland he quickly becomes disillusioned with National Socialism. He is offered a job in Admiral Canaris’ Abwehr Intelligence and is asked to gather information in Poland.

In October 1939 he tries to set up a business in Krakow. Itzhak Stern, a Jewish bookkeeper, informs him about Rekord, an enamel factory. Schindler wants to get the factory running by Jews.

Schindler warns Stern against a raid on the Jewish ghetto. Synagogues are destroyed and on the eve of the Sabbath many of the worshippers are killed.

By the end of 1940 Schindler’s factory is employing 250 men, 150 of them are Jews. For Jews it is essential to have jobs that demand skilled labour in order to escape transportation to concentration camps. The SS often details Jewish workers to shovel snow, which harms production, but Schindler can do nothing about it. Many Jews apply for a job at Schindler’s factory.

On March 3rd, 1940 an edict is issued that the Jews of Krakow have to move into the ghetto.

On Schindler’s birthday he receives kisses from Jewish girls. He is arrested and fortunately he is released after five days thanks to his contacts.

When some of his workers are missing Schindler finds out that they have been put on transport to a place with a new crematorium. Schindler gets his men off the train by representing himself as ‘General Schindler’, the man in command of army supplies.

One day Schindler sees the SS rounding up Jews and shooting those who try to hide. This scene opens his eyes even further. He remarks that ‘Beyond this day no thinking person could fail to see what would happen.’. He resolves to do everything in his power to defeat the system and rescue as many Jews as possible.

An escaped Jew tells the full truth about the gas chambers. Further Schindler finds out that Jewish jewellers have to sort out gold and silver for the SS from dead Jews, some gold teeth are still covered in blood. These facts are believed and Jewish resistance becomes better organized and more successful. Schindler is not believed when he visits Budapest and tells all he knows about the extermination camps.

Back in Krakow there is a raid in the ghetto. Doctors at the hospital hand over cyanide to very sick patients because they know that there is no chance of escaping for them.

Schindler succeeds building an own labour camp for Jewish in Plaszow in order to give them better food and treatment, because at their first labour-camp food was sold on the black market by a German officer.

Many prisoners beg for a job at Schindler’s factory and he does as much as he can, rescuing many Jews. Schindler sees to it that the prisoners get enough food and replenishes everything what is stolen from the regular quotas by the SS commandant. Not even a single SS guard is allowed to enter the camp. Bribing SS soldiers with liquor to rescue the lives of his prisoners is becoming normal. Schindler is spending like a compulsive gambler and the prisoners know that he would ruin himself if he continues spending like this.

In 1944 the status of Plaszow is changed. Schindler sends gifts to the new bureaucrats in the higher SS echelon to keep the new situation just like that.

On Schindler’s birthday the advance of the Russian armies has stopped and the SS is cleaning up traces for the Russians, camps in the east had to be vacated and in Plaszow the SS started burning bodies. In the meantime there has been an attempt on Hitler’s life.

The Plaszow concentration camp is vacated and Schindler sends his own prisoners back to Plaszow to await relocation. Schindler wants to set up a new factory in Moravia because his factory is closed. He may take a number of prisoners with him and starts compiling a list with names of his Jewish on it. The German protest-letters do not get past Schindler’s friend in Berlin and Schindler gets no resistance while building his new factory and camp in Brinnlitz, near his hometown in Zwittau.

The train with 300 Jewish women on it reaches the concentration camp instead of Brinnlitz and the transport of the women goes via Auschwitz where they receive hardly any food at all.

In the meantime Schindler has had to pay for his new camp himself and he doesn’t expect to be able to start production again.

The Russians discovered drums of Zyklon B in a concentration camp and the world now knows about the gas chambers.

Fortunately the SS guard at Brinnlitz are no fanatics but middle-aged reservists.
Schindler is arrested by the Gestapo and it costs Schindler’s contacts eight days to get him out of prison. The Gestapo is told that Schindler is essential to the production of secret weapons. Actually not one good shell is produced in his factory. All his army products fail all tests and Schindler fools the inspectors by buying shells from other factories and shows them instead of his own shells.

Schindler sends the commander of Auschwitz a case of liquor and other gifts to set the 300 women free and send them to Brinnlitz. The women arrive after a few more days and thanks to the good food and the medical care at Brinnlitz most of them survive.

In secret Schindler starts building his own arsenal inside the camp and forms three commando units of 5 prisoners each.

During winter 1944-1945 Schindler and another good German get a further 3000 prisoners out of Auschwitz into the small camps in Moravia. His request for 30 metalworkers is granted. The Gestapo brings Jews, during transport escaped from trains, to Schindler’s camp.

On Schindler’s birthday in 1945 white bread is handed out among the prisoners. Schindler makes a speech to all his prisoners and he uses his influence to have the SS removed. The SS begins to desert and other guards give up their weapons to the prisoners.

Schindler and his wife are dressed in prisoner’s stripes when they leave the camp, accompanied by eight prisoners. They travel to Austria but they are captured by the French. After long interrogations their story is believed and they are released. Schindler is penniless for now. When the war is over Schindler immigrates to Argentina. He pays for his passage and that of six Jewish families, with money he has received from a Jewish relief organization. His farm goes bankrupt and Schindler leaves his wife in Argentina and tries to set up a cement works in Germany, but this fails too. In 1961 he is invited to Israel by some the “SchindlerJuden” and here he is finally honored. The remaining years of his life he spends alternately in Israel and Frankfurt, never at ease, always short of money, until in 1868 the German government grants him a pension. In 1974 he has a seizure and dies in a hospital.

Essay on Pandas

Essay on Pandas

Some records show that there were pandas as early as the ice age around 1 to 3 million years ago! A fossilized lower jaw of a panda was excavated in the province of Puding Baiyanjiao Cave. It is the earliest record of today's species of the giant panda. A Chinese farmer has donated to the provincial museum of southwest China's Guizhou province a fossil of the cranium of a giant panda. Museum officials said that the donation is the best preserved fossil of the giant panda's cranium to date.

It is estimated that only 1,000 pandas survive in China's bamboo-rich provinces. Their numbers whittled down as man has enroached on their habitat and by their poor reproductive capabilities, both in the wild and in captivity. Not to mention their everyday struggle for survival with natural predators and mother nature. The habitat of the panda is reduced by man everyday. What once extended far and wide is now contained in a few small areas. With the local farmers, mining and logging industry raping their habitat. Not to mention increasing human population. Their domain grows smaller and smaller.

Giant pandas are found only in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi.

The rich, dense, bamboo filled forests provide a haven for the majestic panda. They live high in the misty cloud covered mountains. These forests are very damp and rainy. In one year, a forest may receive up to 50 inches (127 cm) of rain and snow. It is also home to many other beautiful creatures, such as the golden pheasant, clouded leopard, sanbar deer, hog badger, wild pigs, and porcupines just to name a few.

Essay on Marketing in Recession

Marketing in Recession Research Essay

Recession the word signals declining sales, mounting inventories, declining margins, employees demotivation, uncertainty of cash flows. The obvious measures like across-the-board cost cutting often end up destroying value. It is those who can look beyond the obvious (and often erroneous) who emerge as winners. This paper looks at how marketing in recessionary times is different from the boom times and needs to be adaptive in the changed circumstances.

Firstly we will develop the perspectives for marketing in recession. We will then present how marketing is to be adapted to the difficult times through Seven specific strategies. Our points have been adequately substantiated through the examples of various companies who have been noteworthy in adopting the strategies.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Recession for You!

The perspectives
Recession provides an opportunity for change and re-configuration. If we view market as a system of relationships, the recession upsets the existing balance in the system. This takes away the inertia in the existing configurations. This loss of inertia will enable one to reconfigure ones relative position in the market place.

The strategies outlined in the paper are a series of planned and proactive measures to undertake when recession strikes, and prepared in advance. It is not as if these strategies don’t work in non-recessionary times. They do, but they take a centre stage in a company’s strategy. It is not a string of knee-jerk reactions to short-term pressures on performance but a well thought-out and conscious strategic decision.

To begin with, let’s look at two major issues that completely change the consumer’s mindset in terms of needs fulfillment and buying behavior:

  1. It might be useful to look at the essential needs of humans, to get an idea of what motivates humans to act, to change, or to buy products and services. Psychologist Abraham Maslow suggested that we each have a "needs hierarchy" which essentially tracks our life cycle from birth to maturity. Maslow has used a ladder analogy to picture this hierarchy because individuals are not motivated by the "higher" needs until the basic ones have been filled. On the other hand, all of the needs are recurring, so they are up and down the ladder quite a bit. What changes during recession is the relative importance of these individual needs. Consumers emphasize more on fulfilling their basic needs first instead of aspiring for fulfillment of higher order needs. This makes it imperative for any marketer to see if he can relate the major benefit of his product or service to one or more of these essential basic human needs. Then re-focus his marketing - his wording, his look, his positioning statement - so that it is clear just how he can help a person have his or her basic lower order needs met. “What psychological "button" does marketer’s message push to get the attention of those he can help” is the prime question required to be answered here.
  2. The big brands become vulnerable during recessionary times. The external cause of vulnerability is in terms of mindshare of the customer. The customer questions the value of the offering and becomes particular about the marginal benefit of additional features of the product. She evaluates it in terms of its functionality and her need, assigning a high weightage to those features. This brings all products in the market close to one another than before in terms of their value in the mind of customer- even for the brand loyal customer. What is worth consideration during recession is that consumers place higher weightage to the core benefits & features related to the product instead of going after non-core attributes.

The weights given to different each of these attributes varies across segments. But in any segment, the weightage assigned to the core functional attributes ‘a, b and c’ increases and that of other attributes reduces, when the customer is apprehensive of spending. As a result the differential between a superior product and a basic product reduces. Specifically the products, which bank on non-core attributes and on brand name, will suffer the greatest value erosion in the mind of consumer. Everyone will be forced to compete on the same value proposition in spite of differing product features.

The above two issues thus imply that during recession, it becomes imperative for any marketer to adapt a strategy that provides an opportunity to unearth important consumer needs and serve them effectively. The customers become more critical in evaluating their purchase decisions. Hence a well-designed value proposition would not only break the existing loyalties and preferences but also create a lasting relationship in the mind of the consumer, with costs reduced due to lesser hurdles in breaking existing loyalties. The customer’s mind share gained today will reap revenue and market share for a long time in future.

All this calls for a totally different strategy where a marketer may have to walk on an uncharted path, say by altering the weights attached to product attributes, calling attention to neglected attributes with an aim to fulfill consumer’s unserved needs.

Keeping the above propositions in mind, we recommend the following strategies in order to make any business recession proof:

The Strategies
Concentrating on core customers
Concentrating on core customers entails identifying the most profitable customer segments, and redesigning the value propositions to serve them better. During a recession, these customers are most profitable. Unprofitable customer segments should be culled out as they consume disproportionate resources and destroy value. A major global brewer, for example, used a robust needs-based customer segmentation to define its brand strategy, but then reverted to aggregate measures (e.g., males 21 to 29) when building its spending plans for its largest brand – Brand A. As a result, its marketing failed to address two separate bottlenecks for two distinct customer segments. The product was not widely available in hip bars among the “vanguard” customer segment (which represented the largest economic potential), while the brand’s image was becoming too exclusive for customers among the brand’s other target segment, “frat boys.”

To identify which bottlenecks to tackle, it is helpful to (1) compare how well, versus the key competitor, the brand’s key segment customers are progressing from awareness through consideration and trial to loyalty, and (2) understand the profitability potential of these key segment customers. Competitive gaps along this customer decision funnel can be valued using simple assumptions.

Leverage the brand’s distinctive “drivers.” After you have used the bottleneck analysis to zero in on the greatest financial opportunity, you must identify the potential “brand drivers” that can remove the bottleneck. Brand drivers are attributes of the brand’s equity that are highly valued by customers and distinctive versus competitors. Focused spending on drivers leverages the brand’s differentiating attributes to remove bottlenecks and provides a sustainable means of growing profitability. When attempting to remove a bottleneck, a marketer will get the greatest leverage from every dollar spent if the plans are built on a foundation of brand drivers (i.e., the brand attribute that, if enhanced, is most likely to improve overall brand preference).

Concentrate on Power Brand
Concentrating on key profitable brands in the company’s product mix helps it to hive off unnecessary costs incurred in supporting a weak brand in terms of promotion and distribution. It prevents the stronger brands from being pulled down and allows the company to focus on profitable brands. HLL has selected 30 successful ‘power’ brands to aggressively promote and extract value from.

Says M.S.Banga, CEO HLL, “Power brands, comprising 30 specific products and brands, contribute about 80 per cent to the total revenues of the company. It made sense for us to concentrate on these products and extract more out of them. The idea is to increase profitability and not merely profits and sales.”

HLL has increased expenditure on advertising by 30 per cent in the second quarter of last year to popularize its power brands. This reflected directly on the sales. Personal products segment grew 12.8 per cent, spearheaded by a 24-per cent rise in the sales of shampoo. Surpassing market expectations, HLL posted a 7-per cent top-line growth and a 14-per cent bottomline growth for the quarter ended 30 September 2001. Even though the FMCG sector has seen hardly any growth in the current year but the power brands continue to dominate their respective categories and show impressive results.

Identifying Unstated needs of Consumers in a product category
Product-market segments should be chosen keeping in view the aggressive stance being aimed at. The segments to be targeted are those where the firm already has a toehold but the current share is relatively low, competitors are weak and not likely to retaliate fast, the size of the segment’s profit pool is still large and where incremental efforts and investments will lead to disproportionate payoffs. Similarly, for making a low-cost, rapid entry into a new business area, product-market segments should be so chosen where opportunities exist to use currently under-exploited capabilities and resources and where options are available to make a low-cost, rapid entry through, say, Mergers & Acquisitions. During an economic slowdown, it is not unusual to find many opportunities of such a kind, and organizations aiming for rapid growth should perceive an economic slowdown as an opportunity to acquire high-quality assets or businesses which are badly managed by existing management groups.

FMCG major, Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), decided to storm the hair color market, currently dominated by L'Oreal. HLL launched its Sunsilk pro-Colour range of seven exciting hair colors. The USP, as claimed by the company, is that the product is specially suited for the dark Indian hair and skin tones. Having established a high market share with the Sunsilk brand in the beauty shampoo market, HLL is extending this brand on to its new product range, given the association with haircare and beauty.

At the same time the leading brands have to be alert and should not take pre-recession equations for granted. They might reinvent their value proposition to strengthen their leadership. The falling prices provide an opportunity to undertake capital projects and launch campaigns at relatively lower prices. During the last recession, Intel was able to get a chip-fabrication plant built at a very favorable price and initiated the `Intel Inside'' marketing campaign. It finally ended with dramatically high profits.

Focused advertising and promotions
The promotion has to be more focused today, in terms of content and target, for a number of reasons. First, the fragmentation of media channels is occurring at a rate faster than media spending. This means more focused advertising is needed to make it really relevant to the target audience and making it cost effective. Second, for premium customers, the snob value of a premium product goes up because of the economic spending around. Hence a well-targeted promotion is likely to be more successful, provided you have chosen your customers carefully. Third, although the advertising costs have gone down, the incidence to purchase has plummeted further for most products, making advertising cost ineffective. Hence when targeting the non-premium buyers, the stress should be on offering more tangible benefits to increasing the incidence of purchase. The reason is that the value-demanding buyer would buy a product more because of what it delivers in terms of price/cost rather than how he feels about the product or so. But between advertising and promotions, one has to choose more of promotions. Brand building will be taken care of some level of advertising and building the product value.

Recession is the ideal time for the deals and promotions. They can offer more value to the customer, and also enable the organizations to bounce back to their original prices once the expediency has passed. We refer to the example of The Taj Group of hotels with has given a bundle of extra benefits at no extra costs to attract tourists. The Taj group has over the past year made a conscious decision to focus on the domestic traveler. “Many Indians plan just one holiday a year. With our attractive holiday packages, we are making it easier for them take more holidays,” says Jamshed Daboo, chief operating officer of the Taj’s leisure hotels. The Taj’s leisure hotels division has laid out a slew of offers and vacation packages that will gladden the heart of any traveler. “Normally we would not have such offers during our prime business season; this is essentially because of the crisis. Our offers are not discounts as much as value additions. We are giving more for the same amount.” On offer are special winter holiday tours, value-added packages and a distinctive scheme for singles.

Aggressive Marketing
During an economic slowdown characterized by depressed sentiments, conservatism and risk-aversion among consumers, firms and investors at large, firms having a long-term strategic intent to build market power will find the aggressive stance as the best mode to achieve their objective. As the rest of the firms of the industry become risk-averse to undertaking new initiatives, follow a wait-and-watch policy (a symptom of pessimism and conservatism), take defensive stances and go on the back foot to consolidate the current position, aggressive firms will see the slowdown as an opportunity and invest in new products, markets, capabilities and value propositions when the rest of the industry is cutting back in these areas.

Recession, is a time of easy pickings for the astute marketer. Just as Black Tuesday was an opportunity for the smart investor to pick up great stocks at throw away prices. Because competitors spend less, it is possible to increase share of voice even by maintaining advertising spending. As advertising budgets crumble, advertising rates soften. So, maintaining advertising spend on the brand would mean increased advertising exposure. TV viewing habits also change during a downturn. Consumers adopt a “fortress mentality” and tend to stay at home and watch TV. News program ratings go up. So, with an identical media plan, audience delivery is likely to be higher during a crisis.

Figure1 shows that those who cut advertising tended to have better profitability during the recession. This is to be expected, because the saving in advertising expenditure went straight into the bottom line of these companies during the recession year. However, the picture changes when you look at Figures 2, which pertain to the phase of recovery. During recovery phase the companies that increase ad spending came out as winners both in terms of profitability and market shares. This study proves conclusively that increasing communication during recession will yield long-term dividend in terms of profitability and market shares - the two key indicators of brand building.

Keep the advertisements you know are already working but also find new media for inexpensive advertising, such as directories, classified ads...even bulletin boards and car windshields. This may be the time to start your e-mail newsletter, if many of your clients are online. Reach people in their homes and businesses with well-written, carefully targeted sales letters, postcards, self-mailers, newsletters and event flyers. For e.g. in an e-business situation a concept of Affiliate Marketing i.e. a program where a merchant pays a commission to an affiliate for generating clicks, leads, or sales from a graphic or text link located on the affiliate's site. It leads to a Win - Win Situation where the merchants gain desired actions or consumer sales and the Affiliates earn money.

Brand acquisitions and product extensions
Recession provides a reason as well as an opportunity to extend the product line or fill up the product portfolio or to gain market share. In the pursuit of offering a new value proposition, new product mixes can be created. This will complete the product portfolio and enable the organization to cater to different customer groups thus enlarging its net. It is the opportune time for acquiring brands. Acquiring brands can help in completing ones product portfolio, or build market share through access to new regions or new products.

Given the pressure on income, some lower end consumers would be forced to downgrade to cheaper alternatives. It is an opportunity to launch a value brand. Companies who add a cheaper value brand to their portfolio during a recession manage to keep most of the down-trading consumers within their fold. Unilever launched a value detergent brand (named Surf) in Indonesia during recession and managed to build a brand with 13% market share within two years. In Thailand a new beer called Chang was successfully launched during the recession. It was a good quality beer at half the price of the market leader.

For firms planning growth through entry into new areas, an acquisition-led entry strategy will be the logical route to build a toehold in the new segment(s). Once the entry has been made, the right approach will include exploiting all possible synergies that can be achieved between the assets of existing businesses and those available with the newly acquired unit

Building brand image and loyalty
“Building customer loyalty is not a way out of recession but it’s a way back to better than normal prosperity”. Like a friend in need, an organization should address the customer needs in the time of recession by cutting costs or offering higher value. Again, the Taj group of hotels, by offering a slew of extra benefits along with its standard package at no extra cost, intends to do just that, while the Singapore Airlines has successfully repositioned itself as the airline of choice for its most profitable customers with its services to them.

Reactivating the Dormant clients
Going through the card files, address book or cancelled account list and phoning or sending a letter to former clients to let them know of new products or services added that could be of help to them are small but effective ways of creating brand loyalty. A disciplined marketing approach helps people in need find the company when they need it.

Another way to reactivate dormant accounts is through Referrals. These are a tremendous source of additional sales. Writing to all existing clients offering them an incentive or special discount for introducing people to business or practice may increase the number of referred business. Better yet, offering the new, introduced clients a special not-available, any-other-time deal will increase the response. Special events like celebration lunch, free seminar, etc. are endless opportunities to maintain the existing customer base and even reactivating dormant clients.

The entire argument is based upon the concept of Relationship Marketing where the customer treated as a partner in the organization’s activities and value is created through a long-term relationship. For e.g. Harley Davidson offers free one year membership to first time buyers which includes benefits like discount hotel rates, theft reward service, special insurance program, etc.

Essay on Raphael and Perugino Paintings

Raphael and Perugino Essay

Raphael's "The Small Cowper Madonna" painting is 59.5 x 44cm, oil on panel. The painting displays Madonna as a very young woman with her child. The picture takes place outside. In the background we can see the beautiful nature, trees, lake, mountains and a rich looking house in the right side of the canvas. Madonna and Child are centered in the middle of the canvas, and take up most space in the painting.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Raphael or Perugino for You!

Perugino's "Madonna and Child" painting is 70.2 x 50cm, oil on panel. Madonna in this painting is mostly taking over the whole right side of the canvas, with her child on the left. We can see some background but not as much as in the Raphael’s painting, where the background circulated the figures. In the back we see mountains. Both paintings background shows large portion of the sky. Perugino's composition is more contained by the figures because they are larger. Both Virgins are in seated position, but Raphael’s Madonna holds her child on her left side and the Perugino's Madonna hold her child on her right side.

Raphael’s painting displays subtle and light colors. Madonna has blond hair and is wearing a light red dress and her bottom is covered with a dark green blanket. Her drapery is simple and her clothing seems light and flawless. The colors are bright and catchy to they eyes, especially her red dress. The colors unify parts of the composition. The background colors of nature, the light greens, browns, grays in the sky, and grays as shadows on the blanket unify parts of the composition, but the viewers attention focuses on Madonna because the red is the brightest color in this painting. The colors evoke emotional response to the viewer. The colors portray warm environment and closeness between mother and child.

Perugino’s Madonna colors are darker but vibrant. Madonna has brown hair and seems more closed up and older than Raphael’s Madonna. She’s all covered up by a navy blue coat; her neck is not as open as Raphael’s Madonna but is covered by a red, with black outline dress. Her outfit seems heavy by the drapery on the clothing. Her clothing colors of green, red, blue, and brown unify the colors in the background. The mountains seem far away and the sky seems cloudy. The background doesn’t circle the figures but it’s mostly seen in the top left side of the canvas behind the child. The colors make the environment feel cooler, quite and calmer as to Raphael’s, which seem warmer and energetic.

In Raphael’s work and in Perugino’s work both babies are nude yet they have different appearances about them. Raphael’s child has blond parted in the middle hair as his mother, and looks smaller and younger as Perugino’s child who also has brown hair with bangs as the mother and is bigger and chubbier. In Raphael’s work the child is looking out at the viewer as the mother, with a carefree stare. He has his arms wrapped around his mother neck as for protection and closeness; he is in standing position with his head turned to us.

In Perugino’s painting the child is looking to his right, showing his face profile. He’s sitting on his mother’s lap with his hands almost crossed. He seems to be peaceful and quite and Raphael’s is more energetic but also comfortable. The children are both hold by their mother depicting their guardian side. In Raphael’s painting the Virgin supports her baby with one hand and on her other hand the child is resting his foot on. In Perugino’s work Madonna supports her baby on her lap, with one hand around his back and the other stroking his leg.

Both artists show aspects of love between Madonna and Child, which is very crucial to the paintings. The colors of Raphael painting are warm and subtle, as in Perugino’s darker and vibrant, catch the attention to the viewer and unify the composition of work. The two Virgins hold their child very close to their body and the child expresses their love in return. The figures seem at ease with one another making the experience of the painting very relaxing.

Essay on Safety of Women

Essay on Safety of Women

I interviewed Mahwish Khan. She is a 22 year-old female from Pakistan. She came here to Wichita, Kansas, in 2001 to expand her education. I intend to show you how Pakistani women have progressed and become more individualized and independent. I will show you using experiences that Mahwish shared with me about herself and women in her family. I will discuss the education and home lives of Mahwish’s grandmother, mother, and herself. I will explain to you how Mahwish and other women are treated socially, economically, and politically, in Pakistan.

I asked Mahwish the differences between rural and urban women’s status in Pakistan. She said that urban areas are more modern then rural areas. I found out that women living in rural areas do not have a lot of opportunities to become strong independent career women. They receive the minimum amount of education, and then their parents marry them off to become housewives to men that have been chosen for them. If women want to continue their education, they have to travel to an urban area where most of the universities are located.

Our Service Can Write a Custom Essay on Safety of Women for You!

In the rural areas of Pakistan, boys and girls are separated; they do not even go to the same schools or do they attend the same parties. When an unfamiliar man comes to a rural family’s home, he is not even allowed in most parts of the house; like the bathroom, or the living room these rooms are considered private rooms. Pakistani’s urban women are more modernized; they have more choices as to what school they attend. If urban women want to go to a school with men, it is their choice. Urban women have more opportunities to go to college and become career women. Usually urban women start their careers, and then find a husband and start families; Verses having someone else choose your life mate for you. Mahwish’s grandmother grew up in a rural area and then married and moved with her husband to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Islamabad is where Mahwish’s mother grew up, and started her career, and started her family.

I also asked Mahwish to give me a brief history of her grandmother and mother’s lives and what they did to make a living. She could not recall too many details of her grandmother’s history, but she would do her best. Her grandmother was born the youngest and only daughter of four children. She only had four years of education, verses the college education of her three brothers, but she had to be taught how to do housework, she would soon have to make a good wife. A few short years later, she was married to a man twice her age; she was only fourteen. Mahwish’s grandmother never had to work to make money. She taught children how to read and write though. She only taught children that could not afford schooling. Soon after marrying Mahwish’s grandfather, she started having babies; Mahwish’s grandmother had a total of nine children.

Mahwish’s mother was the oldest of the nine children. Lucky for Mahwish’s mother her father was a professor of mathematics at a university in Islamabad, he wanted all of his children to go to school and get the highest amount of education that they could. Mahwish’s mother was very bright; she went to Peshawar University the best university in Pakistan. She went all the way to receiving her master’s degree in Botany. After she graduated from the university, she began working as a teacher at a local school. After starting to work, Mahwish’s mother was married. Unlike her mother, she did not start having babies right after being married. Three years later Mahwish’s mother gave birth to Mahwish’s older brother. She continued working as a teacher even after she had Mahwish. She did not become a housewife, until Mahwish was in the first grade. She continued to teach children however, to read and write in her home. She did not make a living doing this. She only taught children that could not afford to attend public school.

I asked Mahwish if she felt her family’s history made a good representation of the progress made in women’s status in Pakistan. She responded by saying, “Yes, defiantly.” She said, “Women use to not be able to go to college or have careers when her grandmother was growing up. All women were around for was to just get married and raise children.” She said, “Look at me I am far away from home and studying to get my masters degree. Soon I will be an independent woman.”

Eventually, Mahwish and I discussed how her parents treated boys and girls in their family. Luckily they felt that boys and girls should be raised equally. Both Mahwish and her brother had chores to do. They both had to help do the cooking, and the cleaning, and the laundry. Mahwish and her brother have been expected to finish the same amount of school. They both completed ten years of early education, and they are both here at Wichita State getting their master’s degree. Mahwish said the only way females are treated differently in her family, is that women are not allowed to go outside late at night by their selves because of safety issues. I also asked Mahwish when she has children would she raise the boys and girls differently, or the same as her parents raised her and her brother. She responded by saying, “My children would be lucky to grow up in the same environment I grew up in.

Then we decided to discuss Mahwish’s education in closer detail. She told me she had completed ten years of early education, and went on to attend three years of college at the National University of Pakistan. Then in 2001 she transferred her credits to Wichita State, where she has received her bachelor’s degree in business administration. Mahwish is currently working on her masters in business administration.

We then discussed what career she wanted to peruse. She hopes to get a job with a bank, or with a pharmaceutical company, or with an insurance company. She laughed and said, “Hopefully I will be making a whole bunch of money.” Mahwish said she does not want a life centered on her family, or a husband. She does want to marry and have kids someday, but she wants to live a life of her own and get settled in a career first. When Mahwish has children she feels she will continue to work, because if she were just a housewife it would drive her crazy.

I also asked Mahwish to briefly describe women’s current status in Pakistan in terms of their participation in the social, economic, and political arenas. Socially the nature and degree of women’s oppression/subordination vary across classes, regions, and the rural/urban areas. Women that live in rural areas are still treated as secondary citizens. Men are established authority and have power over women’s lives. Women are still exchanged, sold, and bought in marriages. They are given limited opportunities to create choices for themselves. On the other hand women that live in the urban areas have increasingly greater access to education and employment opportunities and can assume greater control over their lives.

Women in Pakistan participate fully in economic activities. Women that live in the rural areas work unpaid on the family farms and raise children. The women that live in the urban areas work in low paying jobs, doing service work, and manufacturing work, and professional work. No matter what women do they are still under paid. Women still lack ownership of productive resources. Despite their legal rights to own and inherit property from their families, there are very few women who have access and control over these resources. Never the less, more and more the pressure is being put on women to contribute to the family income, due to inflation, unemployment, and increasing poverty in Pakistan.

Women’s participation in politics as voters, candidates, and political activists is increasing; however this has not led to the emergence of women as leaders in the arena of formal politics. This is so because political party structures are male-dominated. Women in political parties are not given decision-making positions within the parties and are often not fielded as candidates during elections on the pretext that they lack political skills. The traditional notion of women’s role is primarily in the family context. The nature of political parties, the criminalization of politics and, the culture of corruption that permeates public life, and the fear of character assassination, will effectively block women’s participation in government structures.

I asked Mahwish what she feels are the greatest differences between women’s roles and status in Pakistan and the United States. She said, “One thing women in Pakistan don’t do is smoke or drink, and women in the United States women smoke and drink all the time. We also dress differently then women in the US; women in the US tend to dress racier. Another thing women in Pakistan don’t do is give up on having a family so they can have careers. Lots of women in the US will just give up on the idea of having a family; they will keep putting it off until it is just too late. Then in the long run all they have to show for their life is a lot of hard work and no happiness. In the United States women are treated with more respect, than women in Pakistan.

Youthful women are more aware of their identities, their capabilities and are definitely more ambitious. The inflation and exposure through media has opened minds in the Pakistani society, where parents feel confident that their daughters can also be successful in their lives. Similarly, young men want to choose sanguine women as wives who can be more of a partner than just a glorified maid who would cook and look after kids. The time has also come to an extent when women, in some instances, themselves choose to be housewives. One thing the Pakistani women will come to enjoy is the respect and acceptance of their decision to be housewives, or when they can make the choice to work if they need to.

Essay on Sadness

Essay on Sadness

What is sadness? Sadness is, contrary to popular belief, a natural emotion or feeling. People feel sadness whenever they lose something that they previously enjoyed such as someone they loved, or something as simple as a stuffed animal. This particular emotion is actually good for you. It offers relief from the pain of the loss and it gives you some measure of the importance of what you've lost. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury strives to create a society that lives in the absence of sadness. He aspires to give everyone happiness by getting rid of conflict and inequality. However, what the society did not recognize was the value of this gloomy emotion. Guy Montag, the central character in the book, has learned to conform to the idea that the society he lives in is so very rigid and standard.

However he eventually realizes that the society he lives in is not suitable for a happy life. In an attempt to solidify happiness, society became dehumanized through its abandonment of human instinct, which ironically caused society to become anaesthetized.

In the various attempts to abolish despondency by the elimination of literature, all emotions in society were destroyed. In the past, the society was able to read books, and therefore had no reason to burn them. For this reason houses were not fireproof, and therefore Clarise alludes to the fact that firemen used to put out fires, not start them. (8.) Thus proving that at one point in this society, books were accepted and then eventually were banned. While education doesn't seem like an awful attribute, it created inequality, which made people unhappy. In order to explain the abolishment of books, Beatty expressed to Montag, Technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure carried the trick, thank God. Today, thanks to them, you can stay happy all the timeЕФ (58). As Beatty explained, the government utilized technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure to eliminate sadness. One example to substantiate the statement made by Beatty would be the use of the hound. The government used the hound in order to find and destroy books, which would, according to their society, create equality and peace. They believed that the elimination of books would solve everyone's problems, and as a surrogate for books used controlled technology. Since there were no learned people, there would not be controversy over the explanations of ideas, or ideas themselves. However, what he did not account for was the fact that without thought, there was no emotion, and therefore no happiness or sadness. Happiness and sadness interplay off of each other, there cannot be happiness without something to contrast it to. Therefore, in the attempt to make everyone happy by eliminating literature, the ultimate outcome was a society that was essentially all robots.

These "robots" were incapable of comprehending personal history, and therefore had no sense of the passed time. The theory behind destroying a sense of time was that if no one were to grasp the idea of time, then they would, among other things, have no awareness of aging, and everyone would be happy. However, unexpectedly in doing so people were not happy nor sad, merely indifferent. In the conversation between Montag and Mildred the morning after the ordeal with Mildred's blood cleaning, Mildred cannot remember the events of the past night and therefore questions, "Last night- What about last night?" (19). Mildred had no recollection of time or of past events and therefore no one knows whether Mildred was unhappy or just couldn't remember. The attempt to eliminate sadness did not work, because since she couldn't remember anything in the past she not only couldn't remember the bad things, but she also couldn't remember the happy events. The two therefore neutralized themselves between the happy and the sad causing Mildred to be apathetic or even sometimes depressed. It is extremely hard to live a happy life when you can't remember any of the past joyous moments because of the dehumanization impressed onto society. Unfortunately, this dehumanization made people even more depressed, because it could cause them physical harm, moreover it could cause them emotional harm because they may not be able to remember joyous moments.

The supreme consequence of the mechanization of society was that the feelings about life and death became more depersonalized. To many, death is a very personal and emotional event. Contrary, though, in Montag's society, death was absolutely depersonalized. People rarely were affected by death, however, just continued with their standard life because they believed that death was just another "thing" that happened in life. When depersonalizing death, the intent was to eliminate the sadness that went along with it, and therefore make everyone happy. While it did eliminate the sadness, it also eliminated the happiness that went along with life.

People had no reason to cherish life, because they believed didn't think about the possibility of dieing, since it was such a minor part of life. When probing the idea of death, and looking deeper, it is essentially a culmination of life. However, since the citizens were unable to remember life, the idea of death was changed. In their minds they lived for just a moment, and therefore when someone died, nothing essentially died because nothing essentially lived. Mildred articulates the ideology of society by expressing her feelings about the woman Montag killed. "She's nothing to me; she shouldn't have had books. It was her responsibility, she should've thought of that." (51). Mildred wasn't at all concerned that someone's life was just taken, she was concerned that Montag was sick because of her. This clearly illustrates the ideology of society in that no one cared about death, it wasn't happy nor was it a particularly sad time. So in the end, since no one understood that death was actually a very catastrophic event, no one therefore cherished life and lived unconcernedly, not happy nor sad.

Eventually Montag grasps the fact that his society is extremely corrupt due to the mechanization and dehumanization. There are various causes, which lead to the demise of a normal society, and lead to the society prevalent in F451, which relies on technology and abandons human instinct. As a result, the citizens have become non-threatening, non-interesting humans who can be easily led and manipulated through fear. The intent was to eliminate sadness but the end result were humans with absolutely no emotions.

Essay on Talent

Essay on Talent

Even though success in life is clearly determined by both drive and natural talent. I believe that natural talent has the bigger impact towards having success in life. Without natural talent success in life is hard to come by. You cannot have a successful life without natural talent. In order for you to achieve that success you need to apply your natural talent.

Determination is something that most people use as a reason for their accomplishments. The only source that you can get from determination is the ability to focus. It helps you to focus, but it does not help you to perform. As for having a natural talent, even if you lack of determination you are still able to function or to perform. Because in reality no matter how undetermined you are, none of that really matter when you are performing. To be able to function is really the way to accomplish goals such as having to have success in life.

Coming from my experience, I know a guy that is probably the most undetermined person you could possibly meet. He sets in his house and talks on the phone with a beer bottle on the side. He never did know what he wanted to do in life and I know this for a fact because he told me. But because he was so good with computers that he went to a computer school and now he is a computer engineer. Again even though he lacked determination he was still able to function because of his natural talent and as a result he accomplished success.

This example shows you how natural talent has the bigger impact into having success in life. Therefore, I believe that natural talent is the key to having a successful life. Again without natural talent success in life is hard to come by.
