Billy Collins was born in New York City on March 22, 1941 where he started his life of writing and poetry. Since then Billy has gone on to write several books of poetry and been published in several more. He received his Bachelors degree in 1963 from the College of the Holly Cross and soon moved on to get a Ph.D in Romantic Poetry from the University of California in 1971. Amazingly the same year he graduated from the University of California, he got a job as an English professor at Lehman College, which he has had for more then 30 years, and in doing so moved back home to NY. Billy Collins has also been a writer- in- residence at Sarah Lawrence College and has served as a Literary Lion for the New York Public Library.

Among other things he has also won numerous honors for his poetry including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation.
